Global Rewire Newsletter

By Craig Torres

When I first met Fabio Natalucci this year, he told me the Andersen Institute would look back at history and then cast forward into the future. The aim is to look over the daily noise and spot what is persistent precisely because its origins go deeper than the economic and political news cycle.

As someone who had just spent two decades at Bloomberg News, a master of systematic responsiveness, moving to a group oriented toward systematic analysis was exciting. What’s more, the Institute, Fabio said, was going to focus on specific trends that impact finance and economics: technological change and artificial intelligence; the break-up of globalization into geopolitical alliances; demographics and climate change; and, of course, how all this is drumming its way through markets.

Importantly, he noted that we are completely independent thanks to our parent, Andersen. We aren’t funded by a political party or their interest groups. We have no short-term cyclical agenda – political or economic.  The goal is to provide our readers and Andersen clients with intellectual tools to understand the world.

The names of our editorial products — “Global Rewire” for the podcast and this newsletter, and “The Arc” for the blog – reflect our focus on reconfiguration and change. We’re off to a running start.

In our first podcast, Fabio talks about our unique incorporation of economic history into our work and why Andersen established a think tank. We followed that with an interview with Nobel Laureate Myron Scholes on AI. We also spoke to former US Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers on the same topic. Both provide paradigms to think about the new technology and examples of how humans will thrive as it proliferates.

Our Andersen Notes, a research-oriented product run by our scholars, investigates how regulatory changes around stablecoins and bank liquidity are also creating room for more public debt absorption at a time when the deficit is expanding. We have also written about the fiscal implications of the Federal Reserve’s large balance sheet and changes to it.

The Arc blog has probed the slow take-up of AI into business processes, and the odd legal standing of financial tokenization. We also provide our readers with a smart model of how the political system has broken down into non-cooperation from cooperation. Our CEO, Fabio, who worked at the Fed also has a blog with a twist on how to protect Fed independence: boost accountability and transparency.

I hope you will stay with us as we look at the rewiring world, the historical roots of change, and what the arc into the future looks like. You can find the content I cited above in the links. Below we provide a summary of all content in the past month. The Global Rewire Newsletter will publish about monthly and in the future will be drilling down deeper into subjects we are looking at.

Chart of the Month

Each month, we will feature on key chart from our recent publications. This month’s chart comes from a blog post looking at why enterprises are holding back on AI. Despite incredible technological advances, evidence suggests firms have been hesitant in deploying AI at the at the enterprise level. Just over 9% of firms are currently using AI, according to the Census Bureau’s Business Trends and Outlook bi-weekly survey. We expect the cost versus benefit calculation for enterprise-wide AI deployment will continue to evolve as the technologies continue to mature and advance and as AI-expertise diffuses through the economy.
